Convergent media has become a strategic means of accessing niche audiences on a personal level through marketing purposes. The convergence of media involves integrating both the old and new forms of technology to mesh into an effective platform that is portable and interactive to the public.

The practice of convergent media accounts for a combination of mass media communication outlets such as television, newspapers, radio and the internet. The combining of media masses brings people together and is beneficial for people who are technologically involved in our contemporary society. The result of convergent media practices includes the satisfaction we receive as consumers and ultimately plays a big part for companies in expanding their name and exposing their product to the people of the public.

What exactly is media convergence? Media convergence brings about an experience. This experience gives rise to a consumers relationship towards the product and ultimately dictates a certain sense of loyalty when purchasing individual items from their favourite brands.

One simple yet complicated tool we utilise every day is that of the mobile phone. The phone itself has come a long way in relation to the evolution of technology and the discovery of new and improved items that make up a technologically advanced piece of material. The object of the phone becomes an ultimate symbol for convergent media in itself. We now have thousands of applications to replace older technologies, that becomes the most powerful handheld tool to man. From applications ranging from calculators, radios, television and gaming, the phone becomes a replacement for most technologies and is used by almost everyone.

As far as what convergent media means to me, I believe it deals with marketing and advertising for the most part rather than the actual merging of companies themselves. By conducting a merge, each company aim for their own personal gain and positive purposes they decide to communicate to the visual and auditory audiences. Some companies may use this convergent practice to their advantage as a means of benefitting each others organisation by holding events and or using environmentally friendly materials to make their availability of their products more accessible to another audience.

Then there are companies who don’t take advantage and only end up making their name stand out without the other, giving the companies both a bad wrap.

As a social media addict I deal with convergent media every day subconsciously. You might not process what is being fed to you right away, although there continues to be subliminal messages appearing right in front of you through strategic placement and advertising tactics to draw in the consumer.

  1. Really well written blog, you were able to easily understand the concept of the chosen topic as you can tell you have put extensive research, time and effort into making the blog post. Using the example of the smart phone you were able to make it easily relatable for the reader as almost everyone owns one.
